Samsung Bans Chatbots, including ChatGPT, After Misuse of Such AI by Employees

Popular electronics manufacturer Samsung has banned its employees from using generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT after the company discovered they were being misused.

Samsung told its employees that:

Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally. While this interest focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about security risks presented by generative AI.

The South Korean firm added that it was temporarily restricting the use of such AI technology on its employees’ personal computers after sensitive data from Samsung was leaked to ChatGPT. The chatbot will also be banned on company tablets and phones.

Data Submitted to ChatGPT is Stored on External Servers

According to a Samsung memo viewed by the team at Bloomberg, the company was concerned that sending company data to the chatbot meant that it was additionally stored on external servers where it is difficult to retrieve and delete.

Samsung explained:

We ask that you diligently adhere to our security guideline and failure to do so may result in a breach or compromise of company information resulting in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

HQ is reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees’ productivity and efficiency. However, until these measures are prepared, we are temporarily restricting the use of generative AI.
